The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists expresses dismay over the attitude of some individuals, groups and associations who use the name of the union to solicit for financial assistance and other forms of support from unsuspecting members of the public, especially politicians.

In a statement signed by the Council Secretary Isah Garba Gadau, the union cautions politicians, groups or organisations that the union did not mandate or appoint any committee to seek for financial or material support in the name of the NUJ Bauchi State Council.

The union therefore advises the public to contact the state council of the NUJ for clarification on any request forwarded to them.
NUJ warns individuals or groups to desist from using the name of the state council to seek for any support from individuals and groups.

“Meanwhile the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bauchi state council has banned holding of Press Conferences outside the Press Centre at Ahmadu Bello Way” the statement added.

“The council will sanction any of its members who aids in hosting Press Conferences outside the designated venue without the permission of the union leadership.
We warn that the Union will not be held responsible for any untoward behaviour that may arise from illegal press conferences”.

It is deplorable for politicians, private organisations and individuals to invite journalists to hotels or their private offices or residences for Press conferences.

This action is fast becoming an embarrassment as quacks easily infiltrate and encourage Cash and Carry reportage.
It is instructive to note that the Union however exempts from this decision, the State Governor, the Speaker of the State Assembly, the Chief Judge, the Police Commissioner, the Brigade Commander and Commandant of the Armour School and Center and the Air force Commander. Others include the Controllers of Customs, Correctional Service and Immigration, the Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Director, State Service and Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps. This is in deference to their peculiar responsibilities.

This decision is aimed at protecting the integrity of the journalism profession by curtailing the unethical conduct of touts and quacks.

“We urge all members to adhere to the ethics of the journalism profession and also conduct themselves peacefully and professionally during this political season, even as an ad-hoc committee to monitor Press Conferences in the state has been set up by the Union and has commenced its assignment*.
