Dr. Tajuddeen Sanusi, Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has tasked newly qualified medical doctors from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria not to travel out and leave the masses at mercy of the quacks.
The registrar made the appeal Tuesday in Zaria during the induction ceremony for the 67 newly qualified medical doctors.
Sanusi said as new qualified doctors they were celebrating today because the lecturers who were equally medical doctors had stayed at home, if they had chosen to travel out who then would train them.
He urged the inductees to stay and give back to the system, stressing that `Japa Syndrome’ would eventually leave the populace at the mercy of the quacks.
However, the registrar said the inductees can travel out to avail themselves with training but they should always have at the back of their mind that Nigeria was the ultimate.
He noted that there were doctors who stayed for over 30 years abroad and most of them are regretting and they want to come back home; the council is creating a module for them on its website.
“Over there somebody would tell you he is receiving 5000 pounds monthly, you innocently calculate pounds into Naira not minding the fact that in the UK they are not spending Naira,’’ he said.
Earlier, Prof. Kabiru, Vice-Chancellor of the university advised the inductees to go out perform well, work with confidence and make their alma-mata proud.
Bala, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Prof. Danladi Ameh said the inductees received the pre-requisite training from good hands and they demonstrate that to the public while practicing.
The overall best graduating student, Hajara-Mohammed Tom, received 13 awards and prices.
Tom is the best in Surgery, pediatrics, community medicine, human anatomy, biochemistry, hematology, pathology, chemical pathology, among others.
Tom told Martaba FM that she was highly overwhelmed by the awards, Prices and gifts.
She added the journey has not been easy but all the stress and hurdles she went through has paid-off; and expresses gratitude to God the almighty.
She said being a best graduating student was a gift and blessing from God as there many students who were similarly hardworking; however, she ascribed the success to dedication and prayers.
“My success was a combination of my own role; I did the best I could because I know schooling has its time frame, since I did my best and followed it with prayers.
“ Most important also was the support and prayers from my parents, as parents, they ensured that my stay at the school was comfortable,’’ she said.
The best graduating doctor said the extra efforts made during the studies made the difference.
She appreciates the sacrifices from her parents, husband, and other members of the family for the feat she achieved and also commended her lecturers and prays that God should reward them.
