As part of its efforts to fight desertification in the state, the Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has planted 100 tree seedlings at the Permanent Campus of Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG).

While leading other members of the NUJ in the tree planting on Wednesday, the Council Chairman, Comrade Umar Sa’idu said that the Council decided to join the tree planting campaign in order to reclaim the lost forest in the state.

“Considering the speed at which the state is losing its forest areas due to the activities of people who are engaged in illegal felling of trees, concerted efforts must be made to reclaim the forests by planting new trees”“

The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) provided the 100 tree seedlings, however, we are appealing to the management of BASUG to nurture the planted trees to grow in order to complement the government efforts at figuring desertification across the state,” The NUJ Chairman said

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of BASUG, Prof Auwalu Uba commended NUJ for complementing the efforts of the University in the fight against desertification in the University saying that it is one of the main challenges facing the University.

Represented by the Director of Physical Planning of the University, Arch Aminu Mohammed Umar, the VC said that the management of the University is doing everything humanly possible to ensure that the desertification did not affect physical structure on campus reason it embarked on seasonal tree planting.

Auwalu Uba then assured the NUJ that all the trees planted will be taken care of and well nurtured by the university in appreciation of what the NUJ has done adding that other areas of collaboration will be harnessed for development.
