Bauchi State Government has announced plans to establish a Ministry of Livestock Development, aiming to harness abandoned resources in the sector to boost the state economy.
Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed pledged his administration’s commitment to reforming the livestock sector during a meeting with the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee.
The Governor emphasized the state’s peaceful architecture and large forest, which, if harnessed properly, will improve food security and create more job opportunities.
To achieve this, Governor Mohammed plans to set up a committee to design a template for the state government on the best way to reform the livestock sector.
Prof. Attahiru Jega, co-chair of the Presidential Livestock Reform Implementation Committee, explained that the committee’s visit to Bauchi was prompted by Governor Mohammed’s interest in improving the state economy through the livestock sector.
The committee aims to engage critical stakeholders and create awareness about the importance of reforming the livestock sector for overall development.
According to Prof. Jega, the livestock sector has a tremendous impact on a nation’s economy, but it has been neglected by critical actors in the past.
However, he emphasized that now is the right time to unlock the sector’s potential and improve the national economy.
The Presidential Livestock Reform Implementation Committee was inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on July 19, 2024, as part of the federal government’s efforts to address challenges facing the livestock sector.
Governor Mohammed’s commitment to livestock sector reform is expected to boost economic development in the region and improve the lives of Bauchi State citizens.
