It is certainly worrisome that at a time when political matters are supposed to be issues based, some Nigerians feel that, as a nation, we can only get it right when discussions are placed on the fault lines of religion and ethnicity. This is surely not a new trend on our political terrain and so Nigerians know well that such kinds of campaigns are usually initiated and executed by those of us who enjoy creating controversies simply to remain relevant in the commentariat.

We have seen it in the past when such kind of campaign was waged against President Muhammadu Buhari. Executers of that contract worked so hard to convince unsuspecting Nigerians that the president will islamise the country if given the mandate to administer the nation. Seven years into the Buhari administration, not an inch of this country has been islamised.

Those who know Nigeria very well know that nobody can either islamise or christianize the country. It is practically impossible for such to happen. Nigeria’s sophistication is beyond that and so it is laughable that some of us still think they can have a career in such kinds of campaigns in this country.

At this point in time, as a people, we should remain focused on making the country a better place for all of us. With the elections around the corner, let us remain resolute and participate in the electoral process so that we can vote candidates who are competent into power. At the polls, our decisions should not be based on the religion or ethnicity of a candidate but rather their prospects. After all, neither ethnicity nor religion has ever brought bread to any body’s table.

God bless Nigeria and everybody else!
