Earlier today, Wife of the Sokoto State Governor and Founder Mariya Tambuwal Development Initiative (MTDI) H.E. Dr. Mariya Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Uwar Marayu) alongside Civil Society Organizations and members of the public defied the scorching sun in Sokoto by walking a tortuous 3km walk to raise awareness against the gender-based violence, from her Kontagora road residence to Government House Sokoto.

The awareness walk traversed Kontagora, Wurno, and Lodge roads in Sokoto, with marchers carrying placards with messages which read “Ending SGBV is a Collective Responsibility” and “Stop Child Molestation”

“Curtailing gender-based violence starts with you. This is the message we are evangelizing to everyone today. The fight needs to start with us,” said Dr. Mariya Tambuwal.

Dr. Mrs. Tambuwal said the event was meant to bring the spotlight on gender-based violence, by mobilizing communities, government departments, non-governmental organizations, and numerous stakeholders to play their portion.

MTDI and UNFPA commended the efforts of the Sokoto State Government under the leadership of Gov. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal on the VAPP Act and Child Rights Law by presenting a letter of credence to the State Governor.

The awareness walk in the area was part of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. The walk was also attended by the Hon. Commissioner of Higher Education Prof. Bashir Garba, Hon. Commissioner of Science and Technology Dr. Kulu Haruna Abubakar, 3 other Commissioners, Special Advisers, top Government Functionaries, Politicians, Civil Society and Youth organizations, UNFPA, MTDI GBV Forum among others.
