Experts have emphasised the importance of responsible Artificial Intelligence, AI usage in journalism.

This emphasis was made at a seminar organized by the Mass Communication Department, of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi.

In his keynote address at the event, the Deputy Chairman of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ahmad Kaigama noted that the theme of the seminar “Journalism Ethics in the Era of AI,” cannot be more timely.

He explore the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in modern journalism.

Kaigama, who is also a senior staff member of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, cautioned against the unethical use of AI, stressing the importance of thorough research and media literacy.

He said “The advent of AI has revolutionized the journalism profession, but it also poses significant challenges to ethical journalism.”

“As journalists and students, we must be mindful of the potential pitfalls of AI and strive to maintain the highest standards of truth, fairness, and responsibility in our reportage.”

On his part, another communication expert, Bello Madaki Beli, concurred that AI is here to stay and challenged users to revisit and verify the work done by machines to avoid errors.

Beli, noted that AI has the potential to enhance the quality and efficiency of journalism, but warned that it must be used responsibly to avoid perpetuating misinformation and disinformation.

“The use of AI in journalism is a double-edged sword.”

“While it offers numerous benefits, it also poses significant risks to the integrity of journalism. As scholars and practitioners, we must be vigilant in ensuring that AI is used in a responsible and ethical manner, “he said.

Also speaking a broadcaster and news editor with Albarka Radio Bauchi Silas Shentikwak Boi urged participants to utilize the ideas shared during the seminar in their academic journey and to step down the knowledge gained to others.
