In an effort to prevent desert encroachment and deforestation, a non-governmental organization based in Bauchi, Martaba Foundation has flagged off tree planting campingn in some communities in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, where 200 seedlings were planted.
The tree planting exercise is aimed at tackling deforestation and desert encroachment in the State, which continue to bring harmful environmental effects in the state.
Speaking during the event, the Chief Operations officer of the Foundation, Muhammad Sani Abdulhamid, said the Organization find it necessary to embark on the project in order to reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in the waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding.
Muhammad Sani added that the trees give off oxygen that human beings need to breathe, provide shade and shelter among others.
“We choose Zango to be our first destination for the take off of the activities of this Foundation by planting trees in the community in an effort to combat climate change”.
“This is just the beginning of our tree planting campingn in the State, next year by God grace we are going to plant 1 million trees across Bauchi State”
He commended the effort of Bauchi State Environmental Management and Protectin Agency (BASEPA), and the famous Sarkin Itatuwan Bauchi Alh. Abubakar Sadik Ladan for their support with Seedlings for the plantation, as well as members of the organization for their commitments towards the success of the event.
In his remark, the Program officer of the Foundation, Umar Sani Yakubu, Sa’id the project is both timely and important, considering the current weather condition and the nature of the environment which he said, need to be protected from all sort of climate change that brings alot of health problems.
He called on the benefiting communities to put eyes on the trees planted to nurture them to maturity.
In his address, the village head of Zango Malam Nasiru Muhammad Isah, appreciates the gesture of the organization for chosing his community for the exercise.
Nasiru Muhammad described the exercise as a welcome development in to the society which will protect the environment from erosion and desertification.
He added that, the ward heads under him will take good care of the trees planted in the communities to ensure proper nurturing for future benefit of the environment.
The beneficiary communities include Zango and Dr. Sulaiman Adamu Quarters.
Martaba Foundation, a non-governmental organization based in Bauchi state was established in response to the pressing health, economic, environmental and other social needs of the excluded and the disadvantaged groups in the rural and urban communities.
