Bauchi has been the heart of Northern politics since before the inception of the First Republic. The Bauchi political landscape began under the pressure group, Bauchi Discussion Circle, which shed light on Northern politics. Predominantly led by teachers, including Mallam Sa’adu Zungur, this group played a significant role in establishing the Northern People’s Congress (NPC). Notable figures like Sa’adu Zungur and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa contributed immensely to the emergence of the First Republic. Mallam Aminu Kano learned politics in Bauchi under this group.

In the Second Republic, the late Dr. Ibrahim Tahir (Talban Bauchi) was among the six founders of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), which brought Shagari to power. In summary, Bauchi State has contributed significantly to the emergence of politics in the North and the country.

However, since 2005, Bauchi State has lost its way in politics. Politicians’ desperation for power has hindered infrastructural development, leading to high political tensions. The 2007 election brought challenges without a development blueprint. After the election, the political situation cooled, but governance deteriorated after two years.

In 2015, intra-party conflicts hindered development, and the government achieved little due to political elites prioritizing personal interests. In 2019, the incumbent government commenced, achieving significant infrastructural development but neglecting socio-economic development.

Now, political instigators are gearing up for the 2027 elections without a clear vision, which will stagnate the state’s progress. The early preparation for 2027 stems from desperation. The Governor’s public disagreement with President Tinubu’s economic policy has opened the door for political tensions.

To save Bauchi State from jeopardy, we founded the Native Bauchi State Multipurpose Association for Development. Our goals include:

– Promoting unity by eliminating sectionalism
– Transforming the state from salary-oriented to business-oriented
– Involving whoever becomes Governor and National Legislators, regardless of party affiliation

As the Local Government election approaches on August 17, 2024, I urge political parties to conduct peaceful elections. I wish them the best of luck.
