The rate at which students use their mobile phone in the class as lecture is going on is becoming alarming in Nigeria.
While smartphone can be used for research purposes and improve communication between students, it can also create a barrier to effective teaching and learning.
One major issue is the distraction that the use of phones can couse in the classroom. Students may be more interested in using their phone for social media chats or gaming rather than paying attention to the lesson in class. This can lead to a serious distraction and students may not focus on the lectures, leading to poor academic performance.
In addition, some students use their smart phones to engage in acts of cheating in an examination. This can create a negative learning environment. and undermine the quality of education.
Another challenge is the unequal access to technology. not all students have access to smartphone or the internet which can create a digital divide in the classroom this confur the exacerbate existing disparities in educational opportunities and out comes
More over, the use of smartphone in the classroom may cotrobute to a decline in critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students may became too reliant on technology to provide answers and may not develop the necessary cognitive skills to analyze and solve complex problems.
In conclusion, while smartphone can have some positive impact significant challenges that most be addressed, it is essential to find a balance between utilizing technology as a tool for leaning and minimizing its negative impact on the educational sector.
